The Marine Litter Problem

Today we had a closer look at some of the common types of marine litter that end up on Orkney shores. We are a small place with a big coastline and so it is an enormous problem, not just for us but for all the wildlife that live in the seas and oceans all round our planet (which is mostly covered in water!).

At first we organised it by colour - there were all the colours you could think of. Then we tried to guess where it had all come from and how it had got into the sea. From toothbrushes to lighters it al had one thing in common - it was all plastic and it is not going to decompose. It will last forever!
