Steel Pans

As an end of year treat, we went to up to Papdale School to learn to play the steel pans today.  It was very noisy and so much fun!

There were bass, tenor bass, seconds, guitar and tenor pans.  It was harder than we first thought but we started to get the hang of it.  We were learning to play The Banana Boat Song which is a traditional song from Jamaica.  It was great to learn a bit about a musical culture belonging to some of the teams that will be competing in the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

I will try to upload the video clip soon.

Take a look back at the Sports Day post as I have added more photographs.

  4. Steel pans wasnt what I expected. At first we got into partners and then just banged them with the sticks. Then we swapped steel pans. When we got to our steel pan that we were going to stick to playing we learnt the Banana Boat song. Me and my partner were playing on the guitar steelpans. It was really fun and very noisey.

  11. Friday was a lot of fun! The types of the steel pans were Bass, Guitar, Tenor bass, Seconds and Tenors ( which was the one I played with Luke) The Banana boat song was fun to play and it was also quite tricky but I got the hang of it. I think everybody had fun and really enjoyed it!

  12. I really, really, really enjoyed the steel pans. I can still remember what part I play and what to do. This is the seconds I think because I played it. First you do two on the E and C then rest then two E and C then you do two on C then two on E then one on C then two on D and last is a C. The banana boat song was really fun. After I had to go to the dentist so I didn't walk back but I walked there. Thank you Mrs Linklater for letting us go and Mrs Bain for teaching us the sreel pans.

  15. At Papdale we played the steel pans in partners and I was with Zoe. We were a second. Before we got to play the song we tried all the other pans. I liked the bass pan best. The hardest part in the song was where it went " C C E E C D D C " but it was all fun. Thank you Mrs Linklater ! Courtney
