The sun shone beautifully on our visit to the St Magnus Cathedral. We went to learn more about our Viking history and to find out more generally about the magnificent building that towers over our town.
Fran Hollingrake gave us a tour that was full of exciting stories. She really brought the building to life and we learned so much from her. Some of the children asked really thoughtful questions.
Please leave comments below to explain each of the photographs and what you learned to your family.
Thanks very much to Rosie and Mrs Jackson who came with us.
In the first 3 photos we are at the St Magnus Center we had our snack and watched a short video about St Magnus and the Cathedral.
ReplyDeleteIn photo number 4 we were looking at the grave stone. They had symbols that were a hour glass , candle , spade and a scull. there is a mort brod that is also a grave stone it is the first thing they have to get out of the Cathedral if there ever is a fire
It was fun at the Cathedral. We saw photos of St. Magnus's bones inside one of the pillars. We also saw a big statue of St. Olaf, standing on top of another statue, this time a statue of the bad St Olaf. We learned that the Cathedral was leaning forward as a result of being built on a small bank. Ewan howe

It was awesome at the Cathedral. We saw the bell off the Royal Oak and the book was turned over every week or when someone saw that they were related to someone. We also saw pictures of St Magnus's bones.

First we went to the St Magnus Centre. We ate our snack outside then we went inside and watched a film. Then we went to the cathedral and Fran told us about the stained glass window. When she was telling us about the axe and the dove we could see a bird fluttering about through the window. Then we went to teh grave stones and the mort brod. Did you know the mort brod would be the first thing to be rescued if there was a fire? There is a ladder at the door ready if there is. It is special because there is hardly any of them in Scotland. After that we learned about the royal oak and the rings in the walls. Then we saw the statue of St Olaf. Then we went into St Rognval's Chapel and learnt about St Magnus and the three wooden carvings. Then we saw where St Magnus' bones were. At the end we went to Marwhick's hole. They hade filled it up with concrete.
