Farm to Fork

One of our Health and Wellbeing targets this term is to learn more about where our food comes from.  This week we went on two trips as part of the 'Farm to Fork' initiative being run by Tesco.
On Thursday we got the bus through to Argo's Bakery in Stromness.  We were shown around by Shane and he explained the different products they make and how they do it.

Post a comment to explain what you saw, what you did and what you got to taste!
Thanks very much to Kirsty and Mrs Wragg for coming with us.
On Friday we went to Tesco and Kasia showed us round and had lots of activities for us to do.

It was interesting to see that the products come from all over the world for us to buy.  They stock many of Argo's products from Stromness alongside fruit and vegetables from Brazil and the Netherlands!  Why is it important for customers to be able to see where the products come from?
Post a comment to explain what you learned from our trip to Tesco.
Thanks very much to Moira and Mrs Jackson for coming with us and to Carrie who came in to tell us about the bakery on her day off!

We are very fortunate to be able to spend lots of time out and about learning in different environments.  Some of the class are really good at listening, taking part appropriately and asking great questions.  Unfortunately, every time one of the adults was talking to the class on our trips, some children had to be asked to be quiet and listen.  It is VERY important that we all show respect to people who are giving up their time for us.  I hope to see an improvement in this.

  5. I loved seeing the fudge being made and I liked making the biscuits. We got a hot dog roll and a stick of fudge when we left the Argo's bakery. The next day we went to Tesco's and while we were there we got to try some cheese there was loads and loads of different types and different types of bread. I loved the fruit they gave us and I liked doing the challenges. We did different challenges on one challenge we had to find out where the fruit and vegetables. At the end we got to go in to the freezer and the fridge it was really cold and we got to go up stairs in Tesco's I loved being up stairs because I'd never been there before. It was fun and I hope we do it again some time. By Scott

  6. I really liked going to Tesco and Argos because in Argos we got to go to see how fudge was made , we tried cutting the shapes for bare biscuits and we got peedie bags with a sausage roll and 3 pieces of fudge. In Tesco my favourite parts were trying the tasty cheese but I didn't like the blue cheese and the mango and ginger types. We also got to go to the storing area and upstairs were we got another little bag of goodies. Kalle P5

  8. a few weeks ago we visited Argo's bakery as our health and wellbeing food part of our project . First we went to see where the biscuits are made and we all got a turn of using the cookie cutter. Next we went to see the fudge getting wrapped and ready to sell. After that we got to try a biscuit and it was delicious . Before we went away we got a piece of fudge and a roll.

  10. A few weeks ago we went to Tesco and Argo's for our farm to fork project with ms linklater . kasia was a boig help she planned the trip to argo's and gave us a tour of Tesco. My mum ( Caroline Thomson ) came in to tell us about the bakery we got little hats so none of our hair would get on any of the products we did the same at argo's but we wore hair nets. At argo's we saw biscuts being made and we made our own too. We alsosaw fudge being poured into squares and after they poured it they cut it into smaller squares. My favourite part was when I saw my mum at Tesco working and everyone enjoyed it it was great fun!

  11. At Tesco we saw things behind the big doors and in the bakery. We even got to go in the oven in the bakery! The freezer was to cold that we could only put our arms in it, but we got to go in the fridge. The things that Tesco doesn't need in it are behind tall cages so if someone knew what they wanted they would just have to ask someone that works there if they could get it. after we went into a room that had fruit on the table. When we were about to go we got bags with a certificate, a sweetie, raisins and a drink.

At Tesco we got to go upstairs and in the freezer and fridge the freezer was - 16 degrees and the fridge was 2 degrees. We where testing different cheeses like Wenslydale and Orkney smoked cheddar and blue cheese and more different cheeses my favourite was Orkney cheddar .We where finding different products and finding out stuff like the weight ,the amount it costs and other details about the product also where it came from because some customers might only like products from Spain or from UK from Keira p5
